 CHEMISTRY PRE-AICE (IGCSE) 

During the 10th grade, students take PRE-AICE classes, also known as IGCSE (International General Certificate of Secondary Education).
The overall goal of Pre-AICE classes is to prepare students for the rigors of AICE classes.   

Our goal in the Pre-AICE course focus on:SMELLING

¨ An investigative approach to learning
¨ The use of initiative and creativity in solving problems
¨ The development of oral , practical and thinking skills, as well as the acquisition of knowledge
¨ The application of skills, knowledge, and understanding
¨ The ability to undertake individual projects and to work as part of a team
¨ To promote international understanding

Assessment Methods used for Pre-AICE

At the end of the year during May and June, students are required to sit external exams for all of their pre-AICE subjects. The dates for these exams are set by the University of Cambridge, so on occasion fall outside of the regular US school year. Students are expected to attend all exam sessions. 
The papers are then sent back to the UK for marking and we usually receive the results in early August.

Cambridge exams are designed to test students ability to apply the knowledge that they have acquired during the year.

There are three exams they need to pass:

Paper 2 - (ex paper 1) - 45 minutes - 30%

A multiple-choice paper consisting of 40 items of the four-choice type. This paper will test assessment objectives AO1 and AO2. Questions will be based on the Extended syllabus content (Core and Supplement). This paper will be weighted at 30% of the final total mark.

Paper 4 - (ex paper 2) - 1 hour 15 minutes - 50%

A written paper consisting of short-answer and structured questions. This paper will test assessment objectives AO1 and AO2. Questions will be based on the Extended syllabus content (Core and Supplement). 80 marks This paper will be weighted at 50% of the final total mark.

Paper 6 - (ex paper 6) - 1 hour - 20%

Alternative to Practical This paper will test assessment objective AO3. Questions will be based on the experimental skills in Section 7. The paper is structured to assess grade ranges A*–G. 40 marks This paper will be weighted at 20% of the final total mark.
